Accu Stadium now, a Dewsbury move for 2027
The RFL Board approved Huddersfield Giants’ relocation to Dewsbury’s FLAIR Stadium on 11 September 2026, with home fixtures moving from the start of the 2027 season. The decision followed consultation with Super League and Championship clubs. The announced investment exceeds £10 million and includes a new end stand intended to increase capacity from around 5,000 to 8,000. Accu and FLAIR are separate grounds: the approved relocation changes the Giants’ home town for matches, while construction remains a development programme.
The Huddersfield stadium opened in 1994, initially with two stands. The South Stand followed that December and the North Stand in 1998, bringing the operator’s stated capacity to approximately 24,500. Huddersfield RLFC played their first rugby match here in August 1994, defeating Barrow 50–12.
Dewsbury’s Owl Lane ground also began its playing life in 1994. The Rams’ official history records their first home match there on 6 September, an 82–6 victory over Barrow before a full house. The two venues therefore opened within weeks of one another, and both welcomed Barrow for their initial rugby fixture.
The Accu name was announced on 26 June 2025, when the company acquired the stadium’s exclusive naming rights. It replaced the John Smith’s branding associated with the previous sponsorship period. Older directions and photographs may consequently use another name for the same Stadium Way site.
The Huddersfield venue staged Australia against Lebanon in the quarter-finals of the delayed 2021 Rugby League World Cup, played in 2022. Its international programme therefore extends beyond regular Giants fixtures. The same building also staged its first concerts in July 1995, when R.E.M played two nights, followed in later years by acts including Elton John, Take That and Muse.
On 10 February 2008, Huddersfield attracted 15,629 spectators for their opening-round match against Leeds, the club’s largest crowd for forty years. Leeds won 30–10, but the attendance surpassed Huddersfield’s previous Super League best of 12,417 from 1998. The following year brought a strong home finish: a 48–16 victory over Wigan at the then Galpharm Stadium secured third place, with Brett Hodgson converting all eight tries during a season in which he won the Man of Steel award.
Chris Thorman scored thirty-six points in Huddersfield’s 68–16 home win over Leigh on 21 August 2005, combining four tries with ten goals. The club’s history identifies those as its Super League match records for tries, goals and points. In February 2012, a 66–6 home victory over Widnes produced a sixty-point winning margin, with Leroy Cudjoe scoring four tries. Those two emphatic afternoons connect individual Giants performances to the playing field beneath the stadium’s curved roofs.

Block 7 and the League Leaders’ Shield
Huddersfield won the Super League League Leaders’ Shield in 2013 with forty-two competition points. Super League’s official winners list identifies it as the Giants’ first Shield. The trophy recognises finishing top of the regular-season table, a different achievement from winning the subsequent Grand Final. It remains a specific success from the club’s years at the Huddersfield stadium and explains why the 2013 team occupies such an important place in the modern Giants story.
At Accu Stadium, the Giants’ August 2026 guide located the vocal Block 7 group at the rear of the Kilner Bank Stand. The club credits the Huddersfield Giants Supporters Association with leading the initiative. For the same Catalans fixture, H-Town welcomed home and away fans through the old gym entrance, with a stated capacity of six hundred. Legends Bar hosted interviews with guests, giving that match’s pre-game programme several named locations around the stadium.
The Giants had already used FLAIR for their June 2026 match against Toulouse. For that fixture, Block 7 moved to the Mike Stephenson Stand terrace, transferring the supporter initiative to a different physical setting. The club’s guide also named the Beaumont Terrace and placed the ticket office beside reception.

Two railway stations and two different approaches
For Accu Stadium, the Giants give an approximately fifteen-minute walk from Huddersfield railway station. Their route crosses the station square, passes the George Hotel, follows the town-centre roads towards Leeds Road and turns onto Gas Works Street before entering the stadium complex. The club’s address is Stadium Way, Leeds Road, Huddersfield, HD1 6PG.
West Yorkshire Metro identifies Dewsbury as the nearest railway station to FLAIR, which its older guide still calls Tetley Stadium. It places the ground on Owl Lane in Shaw Cross, about two miles northeast of Dewsbury town centre. From the station, Metro gives a five-minute walk to the bus station, then routes 202 or 203 to John Ormsby Way, followed by another five-minute walk. Neither of those five-minute figures describes walking all the way from the railway to the ground.
Dewsbury Rams give the FLAIR address as Owl Lane, Dewsbury, WF12 7RH and identify the same 202 and 203 bus routes. Their visitor guide places the ground around two miles from Dewsbury railway station and confirms parking within the stadium site. The Rams’ published parking operation belongs to their own matches; the Giants’ event information will determine arrangements for Giants fixtures.

Station pubs and the Rams’ existing bars
The Head of Steam occupies part of Huddersfield railway station at St George’s Square, Huddersfield, HD1 1JB. Its own page lists a pie menu alongside its wine and drinks menus. The address makes it an identifiable meeting place at the start of the Accu Stadium station walk.
At Dewsbury station, the West Riding Refreshment Rooms began in 1994 when Mike Field converted a disused waiting room into a real-ale pub. Its operator, Beerhouses, describes a food offer including pizzas, bar snacks and Sunday roasts, with outdoor summer performances on the Platform 3 stage. The pub is therefore another railway-based meeting place, this time at the Dewsbury end of the journey. Its history and setting are distinct from the Head of Steam in Huddersfield.
Dewsbury’s existing visitor guide names the Royal Suite, Bailey Bar and bottle bars among the ground’s refreshment areas. It places the Rams club shop behind the North Stand and identifies the Royal Suite as a post-match entertainment space. These names describe the existing ground before the proposed refurbishment.
For the June 2026 Toulouse fixture at FLAIR, the Giants required season-card holders to obtain a separate match ticket for either seating or standing. The ticket office beside reception handled sales, while the Mike Stephenson Stand and Beaumont Terrace had cash turnstiles. Food outlets and bars accepted both cash and card. The club also advertised a beer festival and a half-time supporter activity. These were published arrangements for that particular relocated fixture.
Our pick (opinion): We would use the railway pubs to anchor the right journey: Head of Steam for Huddersfield and the West Riding Refreshment Rooms for Dewsbury.

A smaller starting capacity and a planned new end
The Giants’ current FLAIR questions page gives an initial capacity of around 5,000 for the start of 2027, including about 1,200 seats. Its submitted development plan aims for approximately 8,000 overall, with 2,500–3,000 seats, and identifies the open end for a new stand. The larger figure is a proposal, not the capacity already available. The club describes staged work and planning dependencies, making the distinction between the existing ground and the completed scheme essential.
At Accu, the Giants’ regular match information identifies Riverside and Kilner Bank as home-supporter stands and the Cowshed as the away area. It states that spectators cannot move between stands once admitted and that refreshments are available beneath the stands. The club also publishes a code for the South Stand safe-standing area.
Dewsbury Rams’ partnership announcement describes a dual-branded stadium shared by the two clubs. Its proposed changes include a new stand, renewed fan zones with food and drink outlets, upgraded hospitality rooms, additional player changing rooms and improved press facilities. The Rams remain a home club at FLAIR.
Our advice (opinion): For an Accu visit focused on home singing, we would look towards the Kilner Bank Stand’s Block 7 group; that is the club’s specifically identified vocal area.

Existing facilities must stay attached to the right ground
Accu Stadium’s accessibility guide records thirty-eight designated parking bays, seventeen with wider spaces and lowered access. It describes a step-free route across the River Colne footbridge and 399 easy-access or amenity seats distributed across the stands. Accessible toilets are provided around the concourse.
Level Playing Field places Accu wheelchair positions along the front rows of Riverside Lower and Kilner Bank, with visiting-supporter spaces in the South Stand. It notes that these pitchside positions have no weather cover and that companions sit alongside or immediately behind. The listing is published for Huddersfield Town, so it describes the stadium’s physical seating provision; rugby booking allocations and companion arrangements should be obtained through the Giants for the relevant fixture.
FLAIR’s existing Rams guide provides disabled parking behind the North Stand, in front of the main entrance, and describes accessible viewing points on both sides of the ground. It says a qualifying spectator may bring a carer without charge, with evidence potentially requested. These Rams arrangements precede the Giants redevelopment.

A Huddersfield base and the ownership change
Premier Inn Huddersfield North is described by its operator as a stone-built hotel beside the River Calder on Huddersfield’s outskirts. The listing includes double, twin and family rooms, a restaurant, Wi-Fi and accessible accommodation. It offers on-site parking with automatic number-plate recognition, requiring vehicle registration at reception. This is an identified accommodation option for a road-based stay in the area, rather than a claim that the hotel is within walking distance of either Giants ground.
On 25 September 2025, Huddersfield Town, Kirklees Council and the Giants announced an agreement giving the football club full operational control of Accu Stadium. That change helps explain the distinction between the stadium’s ongoing event business and the rugby club’s later decision about its own home fixtures. A booking for an Accu conference, stadium tour or football match still concerns Stadium Way in Huddersfield even when a Giants rugby ticket concerns Dewsbury.
The hotel’s own driving directions use junction 25 of the M62 and the A644 signposted towards Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Wakefield. It places the entrance five hundred yards down the hill on the right. That road approach is more precise than treating the property’s Huddersfield North name as a town-centre location. The River Calder setting and motorway approach distinguish it from accommodation beside Huddersfield station, where the Accu walk begins, or Dewsbury station, where Metro directs FLAIR passengers to onward buses.
The Rams’ partnership statement records that FLAIR had hosted Giants against Wigan in 2025 and Toulouse in 2026, alongside Giants Academy and Scholarship games during the summer. It describes negotiations between the clubs as extensive and amicable. Dewsbury chairman Mark Sawyer welcomed the investment as a way to improve the Rams’ own home facilities as well as accommodate their new neighbours. The venue’s relationship with Huddersfield therefore predates the formal 2027 relocation.

Tours at Accu and an open-ended return ambition
Accu’s guided tour includes restricted areas used by players and officials, the tunnel, dugout and several stands. The operator lists the Huddersfield Town and Giants dressing rooms and the boardroom, subject to their use on the day, with memorabilia from both clubs. Tours are arranged through the stadium reception team.
The Giants say they will remain in Dewsbury until a suitable Huddersfield site can be identified and developed. Their current questions page gives no confirmed return date and says the club will retain the Huddersfield Giants name. The Fartown redevelopment option failed to pass the pre-planning stage because of transport issues. The club therefore presents FLAIR as its home from 2027 onwards while maintaining an ambition to return, rather than announcing a booked opening date for a new Huddersfield stadium.
