Choose the match before the room
Our accommodation advice: settle the fixture, venue and ticket before choosing a room. Match the hotel dates to the actual trip rather than the weekend you first imagined. Look at the night after the game as carefully as the night before it. A comfortable return can justify staying longer when the budget allows.
Open the venue guide alongside a map and your travel plan. Find the entrance or gate relevant to your ticket, then trace the journey to each possible base. Measure convenience by the route you will use. A hotel pin close to the stadium can still leave an awkward approach, while a property near a useful station may fit your weekend better.
Compare the total stay and travel cost, including parking, local transport and any extras you actually want. Treat the room as part of the trip rather than a separate bargain hunt. Our preference is an ordinary property with a workable return over an appealing room that makes the end of the match stressful.
Ground-side or city-centre?
A ground-side base may appeal when your priority is the match, an early arrival or a short return. Investigate the walk, the neighbourhood and the property’s arrival arrangements. Establish whether somewhere to eat fits your plans before assuming the stadium area will supply the whole evening. Ask about luggage storage when arriving before your room is ready.
A city-centre base may better suit a weekend with sightseeing, restaurants and companions whose interests extend beyond rugby. Identify the transport connection to the ground and the service you expect to use afterwards. Keep the stadium journey realistic at both ends of the day, including the walk to the city station or stop.
Our recommendation is to decide which part of the weekend matters most to your party. A couple travelling for a city break may make a different choice from a family attending one match. If access requirements or tired children make a long return difficult, give that priority before choosing a fashionable area. There is no single best neighbourhood for every visitor.

Use the linked ground guide for nearby areas and the match-day route. Accommodation searches let you explore the area; compare individual properties on their actual location and terms. A town or district search should lead to reading a map, not assuming every result is equally convenient for the stadium.
For a rugby weekend abroad, combine the venue guide with the city page. Distinguish the international stadium from any club ground in the same region. If following a European club fixture, use the published event venue before choosing the hotel. A club’s familiar home may be different from the ground selected for a particular match.
London and the international city breaks
For Twickenham, compare Twickenham itself, Richmond and central London. Our view is to start with the return journey and then decide how much of London you want around the game. Use the accommodation’s exact address to investigate the route rather than treating a London search as evidence of a nearby room.
For Edinburgh and Cardiff, choose a base around the parts of the weekend your party wants to enjoy and the relevant ground. Read the city guides beside the stadium information. Plan luggage drop-off and breakfast so the match morning feels settled rather than like a second arrival day.
For Dublin, Paris and Rome, keep the airport or international station transfer separate from the stadium route. Compare both before reserving. A helpful match-day location and an easy airport departure may pull you towards different areas; discuss that trade-off with your companions.
Club weekends and two-code cities
Club travel rewards precision. Search using the ground and its actual city, then check each property’s address. When a team uses more than one venue, let the match listing decide the search. A sponsor name can change without changing the location, so use the club’s own directions to keep the booking attached to the right place.
In places with both rugby union and rugby league, ensure the hotel plan follows your own match. Our Catalans Dragons and USAP guides provide separate starting points for a Perpignan visit. The city can be shared while the grounds and event arrangements differ. The same careful distinction is useful for London and other cities with several clubs.
For a travelling group, agree whether everyone will use the same property or meet at a named place. Different hotel choices can work, but establish the shared stadium journey first. Decide who makes each booking and how room sharing is agreed. Avoid making one person responsible for everybody’s payment and cancellation conditions without a clear arrangement.
Rooms, access and family needs
Read the bed configuration, occupancy limit and bathroom arrangement of the actual room category. A photograph of the property’s best room may not represent the option in your basket. Ask about cots, extra beds or adjoining rooms when needed, and establish whether they are confirmed or only requested. Check any age-related conditions before completing a family booking.
For access needs, ask detailed questions about the entrance, lift, room and bathroom. Describe the facilities you require and obtain a useful response before reserving. An accessible label is the beginning of the conversation. Ask about measurements or photographs where those help assess the room, and retain the reply with your booking confirmation.
Our accessibility guide connects the room decision to the stadium and transport. Our preference is to prioritise essentials that affect sleep, personal care and the return journey. A decorative feature should have little influence compared with the arrangement you actually need for a comfortable visit.
Read flexible terms carefully
Look at the cancellation deadline, payment schedule and conditions attached to the exact rate. Record the deadline in your calendar using the property’s stated local time. Distinguish a refundable rate from a request to cancel a non-refundable booking. Read the terms yourself rather than relying only on a short search-result label.
Consider what happens if the match changes, the journey is disrupted or one person cannot travel. Compare those possibilities with the room’s terms and your own insurance needs. If purchasing a package, read its full conditions and inclusions. Keep the ticket purchase, transport and accommodation confirmations together while remembering that separate bookings have separate suppliers.
Check for charges you may have to pay at the property and items excluded from the selected rate. Breakfast, parking and other services should be evaluated by whether you need them. Compare the final total for the whole party. Our recommendation is to pay for useful flexibility when it fits the budget, especially while the trip is still being organised.
Arrival, luggage and the morning after
Tell the property about a late arrival when its instructions require that. Establish the check-in procedure and keep the contact details reachable. Ask about storing bags before check-in or after departure when the match timing makes that helpful. Do not make luggage storage the key to your stadium day without an agreed arrangement.
Plan the following morning around the actual departure. Allow time to retrieve belongings, reach the station or airport and complete the carrier’s procedures. If the group wants sightseeing, choose an outing that fits naturally around luggage and transport. A relaxed breakfast is often a better use of the morning than a hurried attraction visit before a connection.
Before booking, complete a short comparison: route, room, access, total cost and cancellation. After booking, save the address and terms, then move on to packing and the journey. Our idea of a good rugby stay is simple: you enjoy the match, reach your room comfortably and wake up ready for the rest of the trip.
