Hive Stadium

The Hive gives Edinburgh a compact, covered rugby home beside the much larger Murrayfield stadium. Its own stands, food outlets and entertainment turn a familiar national-rugby campus into a different club occasion.

A new home for an old district

Edinburgh finally gained a purpose-built home beside Murrayfield in 2021. Scottish Rugby announced completion on 16 February, describing a £5.7 million project with approximately 7,800 places. That total combined about 5,800 seats with 2,000 safe-standing positions. The smaller enclosure brought professional club rugby into a dedicated ground beside Scotland’s much larger national stadium.

The opening match was arranged for 11 September 2021 against Newcastle, with Edinburgh Trams advertising the new ground’s first game. This is the useful distinction behind the opening year: construction completion came in February, while spectators’ first matchday arrived in September. A directions search for the national stadium still reaches the correct wider Murrayfield campus.

The Edinburgh representative side traces its history to 1872. The club marked 150 years in 2022 with a historical project covering more than 1,300 players, beginning with Edinburgh Academicals player E M Bannerman.

The ground took the name Hive Stadium through Scottish Rugby’s partnership with Scottish Gas in 2023. The same announcement identified it as home to Edinburgh Rugby and Scotland Women. Older tickets, reports and photographs may use Edinburgh Rugby Stadium or DAM Health Stadium; those names describe earlier branding of this compact ground beside Murrayfield.

Edinburgh’s 150th-anniversary history project catalogued more than 1,300 players, beginning with Edinburgh Accies’ EM Bannerman in 1872. It also traces the captains and international players who represented the capital. The women’s team added its own chapter in 2023, with Sarah Denholm as captain and player number one for the inaugural Celtic Challenge side.

Opening wins and international crowds

Edinburgh’s first competitive match in the new stadium ended in a 26–22 victory over Scarlets on 25 September 2021. Rugby365 reported a bonus-point win in Mike Blair’s first competitive game as head coach. It was an appropriately lively opening to the ground’s league history, with the result remaining close despite Edinburgh collecting four tries.

The club’s Connacht preview recalls a 56–8 Edinburgh victory here during the 2021–22 season, with Blair Kinghorn leading the attack. That result is a concrete example of the expansive rugby associated with the ground’s early period. It also gives visitors a better piece of local match history than a general claim that every home game produces tries.

On 27 February 2026, Edinburgh recovered from a fourteen-point deficit to beat Scarlets 24–19 in an Origin Round match. Ben Vellacott scored twice, with Magnus Bradbury and Harry Paterson also crossing. The club’s match report records another distinctive Scarlets encounter at the Hive, this time built around a second-half recovery rather than an opening-day celebration.

Scotland Women sold out the Hive for their 2024 Six Nations meeting with England. Scottish Rugby put that sell-out at 7,774 spectators. The figure belongs to that event and its available configuration; it need not be substituted for the approximately 7,800 capacity given in the original stadium announcement. International women’s rugby is an established part of the ground’s identity.

The 2024 Scotland–France women’s international brought 5,601 spectators to the Hive. Scotland led 5–3 at half-time before France won 15–5, according to Scottish Rugby’s report. That attendance and score provide useful context for the venue’s international role: the Hive hosts competitive Test rugby as well as the Edinburgh men’s club programme.

Haymarket, trams and named entrances

Edinburgh Rugby gives a twenty-minute walk from Haymarket railway station and a forty-five-minute walk from the city centre. Those are the club’s published estimates. Murrayfield Stadium tram stop is another arrival point, served from Edinburgh Airport, Ingliston Park & Ride, Edinburgh Gateway and Haymarket; the tram avoids the longer city-centre walking approach.

The club lists Lothian services 1, 2 and 30 on Westfield Road; 3, 25, 33 and 38 on Gorgie Road; and 12, 26 and 31 on Corstorphine Road. Airlink 100 also serves Corstorphine Road. These are distinct streets around the campus, so the stop name matters when choosing an entrance rather than treating every Murrayfield bus as identical.

General admission access is available through the East and West Link approach near the Murrayfield tram stop, or via the bridges from Saughtonhall car park. These approaches serve the Hive within a larger sports campus. Follow the Edinburgh Rugby entrance information on the fixture notice; a national-stadium gate name on a map does not itself identify the club ground’s turnstiles.

Blue Badge parking for Edinburgh fixtures is arranged through Scottish Rugby’s ticket centre. The published instructions identify Saughtonhall car park and access over Saughtonhall Bridge, with advance requests specifying the fixture. This is a separate arrangement from ordinary spectator parking and gives disabled visitors a named arrival point that can be agreed with the ticket team.

Food, the public bar and Roseburn pubs

The club’s food information names Salt & Chilli, Greek Gyros, Burger & Fries, and Coffee & Doughnuts, with vegetarian and vegan choices available. Its entertainment programme includes mascot Flinty, an Unsigned Stage and a Scottish Building Society passing challenge. These are published features of Edinburgh’s matchday offering; the individual fixture guide remains the place to see which activities are running.

The public bar operates in the President’s Suite inside the national stadium, reached through Murrayfield’s main reception. Edinburgh describes it as a before-and-after-match space for regular fixtures, showing other games on screens. The club also notes that the bar can relocate when the suite is unavailable, so the President’s Suite is an advertised base rather than an unconditional promise for every date.

Because the public bar sits inside Murrayfield rather than in one of the Hive’s four stands, it offers a different setting from the pitchside food outlets. The club’s description includes food before the game and additional activities such as player signings or face painting when scheduled. That distinction helps explain why a Hive matchday can use facilities in both stadium buildings.

The Roseburn Bar at 1 Roseburn Terrace, Edinburgh EH12 5NG, has traded since the 1880s and retains original features. Its own history distinguishes the public bar, lounge and jug bar, also called the fly-half. The partitions in the main bar are known as traps one, two and three, giving the pub a more particular identity than simply being near Murrayfield.

The Murrayfield Bar is at 57–59 Roseburn Terrace, Edinburgh EH12 5NQ. Its published offering includes steaks, pizza, wines and cocktails; it describes itself as dog friendly and having a children’s licence.

Our pick (opinion): Leave time for the Unsigned Stage if live music is part of your ideal rugby afternoon; it is a distinctive reason to arrive before the action on the pitch.

Our advice (opinion): When the President’s Suite is the advertised public bar, we would use it to watch another match around the Edinburgh game; the entrance is through Murrayfield’s main reception.

Four covered sides around a 3G pitch

The original stadium specification provides cover on all four sides and a World Rugby-certified artificial 3G playing surface. Scottish Rugby explained that the pitch could support contact training as well as matches. The result is a working club base as well as a spectator venue, with a compact set of covered stands surrounding a surface designed for repeated rugby use.

Edinburgh’s programme map names four sides: Main, Lothian, Riverside and Murrayfield. Those are the useful stand names to recognise when comparing a ticket with the ground plan. The map also gives individual stair numbers, making the named side only the first part of finding a seat; the stair or block detail on a ticket narrows the location further.

The published plan breaks the Main Stand access into stairs 1–4, 5, and 6–9, while the Lothian side uses stairs 17–19, 20–23, and 24–26. This numbered layout is more useful for locating companions in the ground than relying on a loose description such as the big stand. Use the programme’s stadium plan alongside the seat information.

Edinburgh markets several distinct hospitality products. The Bears Lair is a private option for up to fourteen guests with an inclusive bar, while the Captain’s Lounge sits within the Flying Scot and features current or former captains.

Our opinion: Choose using the named Hive stand and stair number. The four-sided enclosure is small enough that the important distinction is your actual side and whether the ticket is seated or standing, rather than the scale of the neighbouring national stadium.

Accessible places and family facilities

Scottish Rugby directs accessible-ticket enquiries for its professional teams to Customer Services. For the Hive, that contact route lets the supporter discuss the type of accessible place needed before a seat is allocated. It is particularly relevant where a wheelchair position, accompanying person or other specific requirement needs to be matched to the ticket rather than selected from a general seating image.

Edinburgh’s 2026–27 membership information specifically refers to the Wheelchair Terrace and accessible seats, with arrangements made through Customer Services. The named terrace is useful evidence of a defined provision at this ground. The same membership information also points Blue Badge users towards advance parking arrangements at Saughtonhall, connecting ticket selection with the relevant campus arrival route.

Edinburgh’s matchday information identifies buggy storage at the Gatehouse and baby-changing facilities. It also states an A4 bag limit, with exceptions for health needs and baby supplies. Those published exceptions matter for families and visitors carrying essential equipment: the general bag rule should be read together with the stated allowance rather than as a prohibition on medically necessary items.

A Murrayfield and Haymarket base

Edinburgh Rugby Limited’s registered address is on the Murrayfield Stadium campus at Roseburn Street, Edinburgh EH12 5PJ. That postcode places the club in the west of the city rather than near Waverley station or the Old Town. For accommodation searches, Murrayfield, Roseburn and Haymarket are therefore the relevant named areas to compare against the actual matchday destination.

The Roseburn Bar’s three-room history explains why the same pub can be described as a public bar, lounge or fly-half by different supporters. It is one establishment on Roseburn Terrace, with longstanding internal divisions.

For visitors building an occasion around the match, the Centenary Club is Edinburgh’s premium dining-and-drinks hospitality option. It sits alongside the smaller Bears Lair and Captain’s Lounge products in the club’s offering. The distinction is useful when comparing a hotel-and-ticket weekend with hospitality: a dining package is a separately purchased experience and its inclusions come from the named product description.

Our opinion: Haymarket makes a useful base for this particular trip because Edinburgh publishes a twenty-minute walk from the station and the tram serves Murrayfield as well. Roseburn brings the named pubs closer, while the city-centre option creates the longer walk described by the club.

Which Edinburgh fixture is in which stadium?

A 2026–27 Edinburgh men’s season membership covers nine URC home matches and two European pool fixtures, with the home Glasgow derby staged at the national Murrayfield stadium. The derby location is the important venue exception. A ticket carrying Edinburgh’s name does not always mean the Hive; the competition and fixture details determine which of the neighbouring stadiums is being used.

Edinburgh launched its women’s side in the 2023 Celtic Challenge. Sarah Denholm was both the first captain and player number one in the club’s historical record. That team adds another strand to Edinburgh’s identity, distinct from Scotland Women’s international programme. Club women’s rugby and national-team rugby should therefore be checked under their own fixture and ticket information.

The men’s season membership does not automatically include Edinburgh women’s matches. The club publishes separate ticket arrangements and optional discounted access. Its membership guidance also describes a Ticket Exchange for sold-out fixtures and explains that transferred season tickets need to be returned manually. These are Edinburgh’s own ticket mechanisms, useful when obtaining a place through the club rather than an informal resale.
