England rugby, on a grand scale

Allianz Stadium is the name used for Twickenham’s main rugby stadium. It hosts England internationals alongside major domestic fixtures, community rugby and concerts. The Rugby Football Union’s stadium page gives a rugby capacity of up to 82,000.

For a supporter, the first choice is the occasion. An England international, the Premiership final and a club event can have different ticket arrangements and match-day programmes. Start with the event listing instead of assuming the same admission rules apply to every visit.

England’s home Six Nations matches and the Premiership final are natural starting points. For autumn rugby, use our Autumn Nations Series page and check the current official event programme.

From the Cabbage Patch to rugby’s biggest occasions

Twickenham opened on 2 October 1909 with Harlequins playing Richmond. Before the stands and turnstiles, this was a market garden: the source of the affectionate “Billy Williams’ Cabbage Patch” nickname. The RFU bought the land in 1907, helped by the efforts of William Williams and William Cail. England’s first international here followed on 15 January 1910, an 11–6 win over Wales.

That is a lovely piece of history to carry on the walk to the ground. A place chosen to give England a home has become a destination for supporters from around the world. The Cabbage Patch name keeps something of its modest beginnings alive, even when you are looking up at the modern stands.

Big moments, bigger memories

The 1991 men’s Rugby World Cup final brought England and Australia together at Twickenham, with Australia winning. For England supporters it remains one of the ground’s defining occasions: a home final, a huge prize and a result that went the visitors’ way. The museum’s interview with England forward Gary Pearce looks back on being part of that squad.

In 2015, the men’s World Cup final returned to Twickenham. New Zealand faced Australia, and Richie McCaw lifted the trophy with the All Blacks. The stadium’s story reaches beyond England home games: visiting teams have made some of their greatest memories here too.

Today the ground is owned and operated by the Rugby Football Union and remains the home of England rugby. Allianz Stadium is its current official name; Twickenham is still the place name supporters use to plan the journey. You can use either when talking about the main stadium, but use the address and gate on your ticket when navigating.

The walk-in is part of the occasion

Whitton Road is part of the route from Twickenham station towards the main stadium. Keep the station walk and your final gate approach as two separate stages in your plan. The ground is large, and reaching the stadium does not necessarily mean you have reached your entrance. Follow the event’s pedestrian signs and stewards rather than cutting across a crowd to follow a map pin.

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

“Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” is closely associated with England’s Twickenham crowd. Its rugby story is more interesting than the familiar account that it began with Chris Oti’s hat-trick against Ireland in 1988. The World Rugby Museum found footage of the song being sung at the 1987 Middlesex Sevens, when Martin Offiah was playing for Rosslyn Park. The song itself is an African-American spiritual, with a history far older than its adoption by rugby supporters.

Make time for the World Rugby Museum and a stadium tour

The World Rugby Museum gives a Twickenham trip another dimension. Its displays and changing exhibitions explore rugby beyond the match you are attending, and it offers interactive activities for families. On selected match days, a museum visit is available before kick-off. Use the museum’s match-day information and booking calendar to choose a visit that fits your ticket and arrival plan.

Go behind the scenes

The official stadium tour includes the Royal Box, players’ tunnel, pitch-side and the England changing room, followed by a museum visit. It is a chance to see the ground from the players’ side of the occasion, rather than only from your seat. The museum can be visited before or after the tour according to its visitor guidance.

Book the official museum and stadium tour

Our pick (opinion): book the World Rugby Museum and stadium tour on a separate day. The England changing room and players’ tunnel deserve more time than a hurried stop before kick-off.

The Stoop: Harlequins’ home next door

The Twickenham Stoop is Harlequins’ home ground at Langhorn Drive, Twickenham, TW2 7SX. It is a separate venue from Allianz Stadium. Both belong in a rugby weekend conversation, but their tickets, entrances and match arrangements are distinct. A ticket for a game at The Stoop takes you to Harlequins’ ground, not through the main stadium’s turnstiles.

Harlequins’ directions also start from Twickenham station, then take walkers via Whitton Road, Court Way, Egerton Road and Craneford Way. That overlap at the beginning is a good reason to read the venue name carefully before following other supporters. Harlequins also stages events at Allianz Stadium, so the club name alone is not enough to choose your destination.

Getting to Twickenham

By train

South Western Railway serves Twickenham, with connections from London Waterloo. The operator and stadium both quote a ten-minute walk from the station. Whitton is another rail option; the stadium lists its walk as twenty minutes. Save your return route alongside your outward booking.

On foot from Twickenham station

Use the station exit towards London Road, then follow Whitton Road towards the stadium. The station-to-ground walk is the arrival leg; finding the entrance printed on your ticket adds another step. Follow stewards and event-day signs when pedestrian routes are managed.

By car

The stadium’s directions take drivers from M25 junction 12 onto the M3 and then the A316, leaving at Whitton Road. Match-day stadium parking must be booked in advance. Follow the postcode and entrance on your parking confirmation, which may differ from the stadium’s postal address.

Richmond Council operates event-day parking restrictions and may close roads around the ground when crowds require it. Read the council’s event-day restrictions, and use Transport for London’s vehicle checker before driving within the ULEZ.

By coach

If you are travelling with a supporters’ coach, ask the organiser for the booked parking location, the walking route to your ticket gate and the departure meeting point. Confirm those arrangements before leaving the coach. For a scheduled intercity coach, plan the onward journey from its London stop rather than assuming it stops at the ground.

Your coach provider should supply the event-specific access instructions. The stadium’s general page includes non-match-day parking information; use your match arrangements for an event visit.

Make the most of match day

Gates, tickets and arrival

Go to the entrance shown on your ticket and leave time for security checks. Use the gate opening time in your event’s pre-match information. Have your ticket ready before reaching the turnstile and follow its delivery instructions.

Bags and prohibited items

The stadium asks visitors to avoid bringing bags. If one is essential, it must be A4 size or smaller. Leave overnight luggage at your accommodation; use a bag-drop service only when your event information confirms it.

Alcohol, glass containers and cans cannot be taken through the turnstiles. Barbecues and gazebos are prohibited in RFU car parks. Read the current ground rules for the full list, especially if you need to bring medical or other essential equipment.

Food, drink and payment

Bars and food outlets operate at the stadium. The official FAQ says catering is card-only unless an event states otherwise, and tap water can be requested at the bars. The event information lists its food offer and serving arrangements.

Rugby pubs before the match

The Cabbage Patch markets itself as a rugby pub and is on London Road near Twickenham station. Its own directions place it on the town side of the station. It suits a stop before you set off towards the stadium.

The Barmy Arms is on The Embankment in Twickenham, beside the riverside area. It is a different choice from the direct station-to-stadium walk, so allow time to return towards the ground.

Four more places to meet before the rugby

The Eel Pie — 9–11 Church Street, Twickenham, TW1 3NJ. The pub explicitly welcomes supporters heading to both the main stadium and The Stoop, and screens rugby in its bar. Its Six Nations page explains that England home games use different food and table arrangements, so choose your match-day meal from that information. Church Street makes this a town-centre stop before heading back towards the ground.

The Turk’s Head — 28 Winchester Road, St Margarets, Twickenham, TW1 1LF. Its official live-sport programme includes the Six Nations, making it a rugby option for a St Margarets meeting point. Choose this when your group wants to start on that side of Twickenham, then map the onward walk separately. A good pub stop should fit your journey rather than send everyone hurrying back across town.

The Prince’s Head — 28 The Green, Richmond, TW9 1LX. This is an option for supporters staying or meeting in Richmond: its official programme includes Six Nations and other rugby screenings. Richmond is a separate starting point from the Twickenham station walk, so put the transfer to the stadium into your plan before settling down for lunch.

The Duke of Cambridge — Kneller Road, Whitton, Twickenham, TW2 7DT. Its official site lists live sport, and CAMRA places it close to both rugby grounds. It is a useful alternative to a town-centre meeting point if your approach is from Whitton. Save the pub’s own map and your stadium gate so everyone understands where the pre-match stop ends and the walk to the ground begins.

The West Car Park picnic tradition

Twickenham’s car-park picnics are part of its rugby history. The World Rugby Museum records supporters gathering in the West Car Park for the Middlesex Sevens; press accounts also describe the pre-match lunch tradition.

Our pick (opinion): use the Cabbage Patch as your station-side meeting place, then make the Whitton Road approach together. Its rugby connection makes a better opening chapter to a Twickenham day than a last-minute rendezvous at the gates.

Stands and seating advice

The bowl has North, East, South and West stands, with lower, middle and upper seating tiers. Choose by the view you want and the climb your group is comfortable making. A stand name alone is not enough: the block and row matter too.

East and West stands

Choose a side-on position if you want to follow both teams across the pitch. A more central block makes comparing play at the two ends easier.

North and South stands

Choose an end-on position if you enjoy seeing the attacking lines develop towards you. The opposite try line will be further away.

Lower tier

Look here if closeness to the action matters most. Compare the exact row and block: a low viewpoint gives a different picture from a raised one.

Middle tier

Our choice for a balance between an elevated overview and feeling part of the crowd. Compare steps, route and ticket terms before booking.

Upper tier

An elevated position can help you read the pitch, but the stadium warns that the rake is steep. Avoid it if heights make your group uncomfortable.

Children and nervous visitors

The stadium advises against upper-tier seats for children under eight. Choose suitable seats at purchase; it cannot promise to move your group on match day.

Use the stadium’s interactive seat view and seating plan. Do not assume a roof or a particular stand keeps every seat dry: bring suitable clothing and ask the seller about the exact position if cover is important.

Open official stadium information

Our advice (opinion): start with a side-on seat for your first view of Twickenham’s bowl. Use the stadium’s seat-view tool to judge the height before choosing between tiers.

Accessibility at Allianz Stadium

Start with the stadium’s accessibility page and its linked access guides. Contact the ticketing team about your requirements before booking a standard seat: the entrance, seating position and route through the stadium should work together.

England Rugby lists wheelchair spaces on raised, covered terraces reached by lift, plus accessible pitch-side seating and bays that are uncovered. It also describes RADAR-key accessible toilets, lowered counters, support stewards and an accessible changing facility in the south-west corner near the Rugby Store. Hoist users must bring their own sling.

Audio-descriptive commentary receivers are available on a first-come basis from the Ticket Office or accessible support point. Tell the Ticket Office about an assistance dog at the application stage. The stadium does not offer wheelchair hire.

For train travel, consult the operator’s station accessibility information and arrange assistance with the operator where needed. Check lift status and service information near your travel date. For a car journey, request the current accessible parking instructions from the official ticketing team.

Where to stay for Twickenham

Twickenham: keep the match close

Search local accommodation if you want to reduce the journey after the final whistle. Compare the hotel’s actual location with your stadium gate and transport plans. Ask about luggage storage if you arrive before check-in, since the stadium’s small-bag policy still applies.

The stadium confirms an on-site hotel. The South Stand is home to Radisson RED London Twickenham. Visit the Radisson official site for the current property name, facilities and booking details.

Richmond: another local base

Compare accommodation near your intended transport connection. Richmond has rail and District line connections according to the stadium travel information. Decide how you will travel between your hotel and Twickenham, including after the match, before choosing a room.

Central London: make more of the weekend

A central London stay can make sense if you are also visiting the city. For a rail trip to the match, compare the route to Waterloo as well as the hotel’s city-centre location. Check your return service before booking an evening meal or arranging a late arrival at the hotel.

Our advice (opinion): choose Twickenham for a weekend built around the museum and the match; choose Richmond if you want another nearby base. We would save central London for a trip with a substantial city itinerary.
