Old Trafford: a football home and rugby league final ground

Old Trafford is Manchester United’s home and the setting for Super League’s championship final. The Premier League’s September 2026 stadium guide lists 74,158 seats and uses the familiar Theatre of Dreams nickname.

Manchester United opened Old Trafford on 19 February 1910 with a match against Liverpool, losing 4–3. The club’s history describes an original ground designed for an approximately 80,000-capacity crowd.

A German air raid struck Old Trafford on 11 March 1941, destroying the main stand, dressing rooms and offices. Manchester United’s wartime history describes the physical damage as a major turning point for the stadium. Matt Busby arrived as manager in 1945 during the club’s recovery.

United’s own corporate history traces several stages of stadium growth: approximately 58,000 capacity by 1996, 68,000 by 2000 and 76,000 in 2006.

The original stadium was designed by Archibald Leitch, who also worked on Liverpool’s Anfield. Construction finished late in 1909, but initial problems delayed United’s move from Bank Street. About 50,000 spectators attended the first Old Trafford fixture in February 1910. United led Liverpool 3–1 through goals from George Wall, Sandy Turnbull and Thomas Horner, before the visitors overturned that advantage in the final twenty minutes. Arthur Goddard and Jimmy Stewart supplied Liverpool’s goals. After that opening defeat, United remained unbeaten at their new home for almost a year and became league champions in 1911.

Old Trafford staged the 2000 Rugby League World Cup final, when Australia beat New Zealand 40–12. Matt Gidley scored the only first-half try, leaving Australia 6–0 ahead. Nathan Hindmarsh extended the lead, but Lesley Vainikolo and Tonie Carroll helped keep New Zealand within six points entering the final quarter. Australia then pulled away: Wendell Sailor scored twice in five minutes, with Brad Fittler and Trent Barrett adding late tries. It was Australia’s sixth consecutive world title.

John Henry Davies financed the original building work, which began in 1908. The Manchester Brewery Company bought the land and leased it to United. The move proved timely: strong winds destroyed the wooden stand at Bank Street two days before Old Trafford’s opening fixture. United secured their first championship at the new ground on the final day of the 1910–11 season, beating Sunderland 5–1 at home. Harold Halse scored twice in that title-clinching match.

The moments that made Grand Final night

The first Super League Grand Final took place at Old Trafford on 24 October 1998, with Wigan beating Leeds. Kris Radlinski’s retrospective identifies a Wigan side containing Jason Robinson and Andrew Farrell and recalls the final as his only Grand Final victory.

Rob Burrow was the outstanding player in both the 2007 and 2011 Grand Finals. In 2011, when Leeds beat St Helens 32–16, he received all 37 votes cast by the attending rugby league writers and broadcasters. His spectacular try that evening remains one of the specific performances associated with this pitch. The individual award was renamed the Rob Burrow Award from the 2024 final, replacing the Harry Sunderland Trophy name.

Old Trafford’s finals have produced sharply different types of contest. St Helens beat Bradford 19–18 in 2002; Leeds edged Wigan 22–20 in 2015; and Wigan defeated Catalans Dragons 10–2 in 2023.

Rugby League Commercial and Manchester United announced an agreement in October 2024 keeping the Grand Final at Old Trafford until at least 2027. The announcement specifically recalled Jason Robinson’s try in the first final and Burrow’s two player-of-the-match performances.

Australia and New Zealand returned for the 2013 World Cup final before 74,468 spectators. Australia won 34–2, with two tries each for Billy Slater and Brett Morris. Johnathan Thurston landed all seven kicks at goal and overtook Mick Cronin as Australia’s leading Test points scorer, finishing the match with 318 international points. Cameron Smith captained the winners, whose defence prevented New Zealand from scoring a try. The NRL identifies that attendance as an Australian overseas Test record in its 2022 retrospective.

Jimmy Murphy’s statue was unveiled outside the Stretford End on 3 May 2023. Alan Heriot created the sculpture, and the ceremony brought together Murphy’s family, more than a thousand supporters, club representatives and members of the 1968 European Cup-winning team. Murphy worked with Sir Matt Busby as a coach and helped rebuild the team after Munich. The unveiling marked sixty-five years since he led United to the 1958 FA Cup final, adding another named monument to the public areas around the ground.

Wharfside, Old Trafford tram stop and Chester Road buses

Wharfside is on the Trafford Centre tram route, with TfGM publishing an eight-minute walk to Old Trafford in its venue travel instructions. The same operator guide gives 12 minutes from Old Trafford stop on the Altrincham line. Both are in Zone 2.

TfGM lists Old Trafford, Trafford Bar, Wharfside and Exchange Quay as nearby tram stops. The corresponding routes include Altrincham, East Didsbury, Manchester Airport, Trafford Park and Eccles via MediaCityUK. Its rail instructions also state that the Old Trafford railway station shown on some maps is no longer used.

Bee Network routes 30 and 250 connect Piccadilly Gardens with Trafford Park and the Trafford Centre. Route 255 runs through Stretford towards Carrington and Partington, 256 continues through Lostock to Flixton, and 263 links Stretford, Sale and Altrincham. TfGM includes these numbered services in its Old Trafford venue directions. They give concrete alternatives to the tram for people starting around Piccadilly Gardens or approaching from the western and southern suburbs.

Manchester United identifies cycle racks at N2 beside the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, E2 beside the East Stand and W2 beside the West Stand. Its driving instructions distinguish matchday access from non-matchday visits: E1 and E2 permits use the approach from Wharfside Way, while non-matchday visitors are directed to E2.

Our advice (opinion): Wharfside would be our first tram option to compare: TfGM’s eight-minute walk makes it an appealing final approach for this ground.

Food stops and the stadium’s visitor facilities

The Bishop Blaize is at 708 Chester Road, Stretford, Manchester, M32 0SF. Wetherspoon publishes the pub’s address and its food-and-drink information on the property page.

Manchester United’s visitor guide identifies the south-east corner as its football away-turnstile area and operates bag-drop facilities for items outside its permitted dimensions. The stadium prohibits smoking, including electronic cigarettes.

The Red Café is beside the museum-and-tour entrance in the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand. Its menu covers breakfast, meals, snacks, cakes and desserts, with children included in the offer. Manchester United accepts table reservations for this public café; its published visitor opening arrangements exclude home matchdays.

Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Charlton and the Stretford End

The stadium map names the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand on the north side, the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand opposite it, the East Stand and the Stretford End to the west. It also marks the north-east and north-west quadrants. Those names describe distinct parts of the seating bowl: a ticket for a quadrant is a corner position, while the two named long-side stands run along the pitch.

The Sir Bobby Charlton Stand was unveiled under that name on 3 April 2016. Manchester United’s anniversary coverage records the ceremony at Old Trafford, tying the stand to one of the club’s defining players.

Outside the ground, the United Trinity statue depicts George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton. The Premier League’s stadium guide also identifies stands honouring Charlton and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Our pick (opinion): We would favour a long-side view in the Sir Alex Ferguson or Sir Bobby Charlton stand when following the movement of play is the priority.

Tour routes and named accessibility support

The standard stadium tour route contains 177 steps. Manchester United offers a flat-route alternative and asks visitors with access requirements to contact the museum at least 48 hours ahead. The published contact is museum.enquiries@manutd.co.uk.

Manchester United advertises dedicated British Sign Language tours. Its tour formats also include a shorter Sneak Peek experience, combining museum access with a look into the stadium bowl.

The club’s access statement directs questions about accessible seating to its Disability Liaison Officer at accessibility@manutd.co.uk, or to the ticket office on 0161 524 0211. That is the stadium’s specific contact for seating requirements.

An overnight base and a museum visit

Hotel Football is at 99 Sir Matt Busby Way, Manchester, M16 0SZ. Marriott lists it as Hotel Football, Old Trafford, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, placing an overnight option on the road associated with the stadium.

Hotel Football’s room descriptions include stadium-view options, football memorabilia and artwork, plus televisions carrying sports channels. These features belong to particular room descriptions on the hotel’s own website.

Manchester United’s stadium tour visits the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand seating area, a players’ dressing room, the tunnel, pitchside dugouts and the press or media room. The museum adds the club-history component.

The stadium also houses the Skills Lab, an education space linked with museum visits and tours. Manchester United advertises eleven workshop choices, with its standard education package combining an enrichment workshop, stadium tour and self-guided museum time.

The museum occupies three floors. Its upper level contains the trophy and Munich rooms, academy displays and material on the Newton Heath beginnings. The middle level covers kit history, international players, managers and United overseas. On the lower floor are the stadium and floodlight histories, Treble corridor and tour meeting point. Visitors collect tickets at Sir Alex Ferguson Stand reception and use lifts or escalators to begin on level three.

Hotel Football’s Class of ’92 rooms form a group of seven within its 133-bedroom property. Their interiors display memorabilia from the players’ careers, including signed shirts, Champions League medals and photographs. The rooms overlook Old Trafford, and the operator provides a dedicated email, sleep@hotelfootball.com, for family and accessible-room enquiries. The themed accommodation links the overnight stay with the footballers whose careers are commemorated inside.

The hotel’s separate stadium-view room specification includes a king-size Hypnos bed, a rain shower, full-size bath and a small SMEG fridge. It also lists 55-inch smart televisions with Sky Sports and TNT Sports, Wi-Fi and Class of ’92 toiletries. These rooms face Old Trafford itself. The hotel additionally offers king rooms with city views and larger corner rooms with views in two directions.

The guided stadium route takes approximately seventy minutes, and United recommends allowing around an hour for the museum’s three floors. Small-bag lockers are available at Sir Alex Ferguson Stand reception. The club also supplies multimedia guides in several languages to accompany the tour.

King twin rooms at Hotel Football contain two single Hypnos beds, while king doubles have one king-size bed. Both room descriptions include a rain shower, Wi-Fi and sports television. Accessible-room enquiries go to the hotel’s accommodation team by email.

Old Trafford rugby questions

Was the Grand Final always played here? The 2020 final moved to Hull’s KCOM Stadium. Super League’s announcement attributed the switch to Manchester United’s congested November fixture schedule, with that season disrupted by the pandemic.

Which result opened the Grand Final era? Wigan beat Leeds 10–4 in 1998 before a crowd of 43,533, with Jason Robinson receiving the player-of-the-match award. The first two Super League seasons had their champions determined by league leadership instead.

Where is the stadium, rather than the hotel or cricket ground? Manchester United gives its address as Sir Matt Busby Way, Old Trafford, Manchester, M16 0RA. This is the football ground used for the rugby league Grand Final. Continue the rugby trip with Wembley’s Challenge Cup history, Wigan’s home ground or Headingley in Leeds.
