Kingston Park: from Gosforth to Newcastle Red Bulls
Kingston Park began as the sports ground of the Newcastle Chronicle and Journal. Gosforth Rugby Football Club bought it in 1989, and a new stand and clubhouse opened in 1990. The local Historic Environment Record identifies that change from a newspaper sports ground to a rugby home, placing the stadium’s origins in the city’s working sporting life.
The ground developed in stages. Terraces were added at the ends of the East Stand, the southern terrace gained a roof, and a new West Stand followed. The council record credits TTH Architects and Metnor Construction with that development. Newcastle United reserves also played here during the 1990 s, followed by Newcastle Blue Star between 2007 and 2009.
Newcastle Rugby bought back Kingston Park in June 2015. The ground had been sold to Northern Rock in 2007, then acquired by Northumbria University in 2008. Newcastle continued playing under a lease during the university’s ownership.
The Falcons became Newcastle Red Bulls after Red Bull took full ownership of Newcastle Rugby Ltd in August 2025. The takeover announcement kept the team at Kingston Park, with the new name taking effect for the 2025–26 season. Supporters searching for Newcastle Falcons tickets are following the earlier name of the same Premiership club.
Newcastle’s first English Premiership championship came in 1998, during the Kingston Park era. The title was secured away at Harlequins with a 44–20 victory and six Newcastle tries. That distinction matters in the ground’s history: Kingston Park housed the champions, while the decisive title-winning match itself took place at the Stoop.
The stadium changed from natural grass to an artificial 3G playing surface for the 2014–15 season. Newcastle became the second Premiership club to make that change, following Saracens.
A further synthetic-pitch installation began at Kingston Park in June 2026. The club announced the work as preparation for the following season. This adds a newer chapter to the earlier switch away from grass; the surface at the centre of the ground has continued to receive investment under the Newcastle Red Bulls identity.

European nights and Newcastle rugby memories
Callum Chick’s late try gave Newcastle a 23–20 Champions Cup victory over Montpellier at Kingston Park on 21 October 2018.
The 2018–19 European campaign brought Champions Cup rugby back to Kingston Park after a 14-year absence. Newcastle’s pool included Montpellier, Toulon and Edinburgh. The competition gave the stadium a different set of visiting supporters from its domestic programme, with a Scottish opponent and two French clubs sharing the same group.
Newcastle have also taken major home matches beyond Kingston Park. Newcastle United’s announcement for The Big One described the move to St James’ Park in 2018 and a crowd expected to exceed the previous home attendance record. That older benchmark came from a Bath match at Gateshead International Stadium in May 1998, illustrating why club attendance records and Kingston Park records are different categories.
Kingston Park’s vintage bus bar is a distinctive part of the venue’s events offering. The stadium’s industry listing describes serving space on the lower deck and seating above. It also names the ground’s catering vehicles: Take the Bait for fish and chips, Grilled to See You for burgers and Deli Dash for sandwiches, salads and potatoes.
Kingston Park also stages representative rugby beyond the Newcastle club programme. Scottish Rugby records the women’s England Under-20s match against Scottish Futures here on 25 March 2023, which ended 66–19 to England. The match puts women’s age-grade international rugby among the ground’s uses, alongside the better-known men’s professional home fixtures.

Metro, buses and Brunton Road
From Newcastle Central railway station, the club directs travelling supporters onto the Tyne and Wear Metro. Kingston Park and Bank Foot are on the Airport branch, and the venue gives a five-minute walk from either station. Newcastle’s mainline arrival and the final stadium approach can therefore be connected by the same urban railway system.
The stadium’s published bus options are Stagecoach services X47 and X78 from Eldon Square. Both serve Windsor Way, for which Newcastle gives an approximately two-minute walk to the ground. These are named alternatives to the Metro, with the city-centre bus departure at Eldon Square rather than inside Central railway station.
Kingston Park’s full address is Kingston Park Stadium, Brunton Road, Kenton Bank Foot, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE13 8AF. The club places it five miles from Newcastle city centre and three miles from Newcastle International Airport. Its published capacity is 10,210, with 1990 given as the stadium’s construction year.

Food, payment and digital tickets
The club’s October 2026 Leicester matchday guide lists pizza, fried chicken, macaroni cheese, hog roast, deli food, coffee and sweet items across the Fan Zone and stadium bowl. That gives a concrete picture of recent Kingston Park catering, including substantial meals and smaller snacks, rather than a promise that every kiosk sells an identical menu at every fixture.
For 2026–27, Newcastle introduced its own ticketing app. Existing supporters sign in with their Newcastle Red Bulls ticketing-account details, then use the Tickets area to retrieve their purchases. The app supports Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. Tickets saved to the wallet remain accessible when the mobile signal around Kingston Park is limited.
Newcastle’s digital-ticket rules reject screenshots and printed copies of digital tickets. Entry uses the live ticket in the official app or mobile wallet. The club permits ticket transfers for all games; a child’s ticket can stay on the accompanying adult’s device. A season ticket, however, can only be used on one device.
Kingston Park operates without cash payments. The club accepts card and contactless methods for purchases within the stadium. Its published no-smoking policy also covers the seating bowl, e-cigarettes and vapes. These rules apply inside the ground and sit alongside the ticket conditions used for Newcastle Red Bulls matches.
Our pick (opinion): The East Stand deserves a stop for the Tap & Tackle and 1877 bars; they give that side of the ground a useful role even when your seat is elsewhere.

The four stands and hospitality choices
The West Stand is the largest stand and is entirely seated. Opposite it, the East Stand combines a small covered seating section behind the dugouts with uncovered terracing on either side. The South Stand is a covered standing terrace behind the posts; the North Stand is an uncovered standing terrace.
The East Stand contains the Tap & Tackle and 1877 bars, along with the club shop and ticket office. The North Stand has no dedicated food, drink or toilet facilities, so spectators there use the East or West Stand facilities. Kingston Park’s four sides therefore offer different combinations of seating, cover and amenities.
The 100 Club hospitality package includes a padded West Stand seat. Its 2026–27 dining offer has three food stations with chefs serving street food, followed by a dessert station. The North West Suite takes a different approach, with booth and bar seating and a menu built around tapas and small plates.
The Premier Suite advertises a three-course meal and pre-match question-and-answer sessions. Executive boxes provide private space overlooking the pitch, with a choice of a three-course or grazing menu. The boxes face directly onto Kingston Park’s playing area.
Our opinion: The most meaningful Kingston Park ticket choice is between the covered South terrace and a West Stand seat. We would choose South for a standing, behind-the-posts afternoon, or West for a fixed seat along the touchline. The uncovered North terrace needs a separate decision about exposure, while the small East seating section is the more particular choice for supporters interested in the dugout side.

Accessible seating and West Stand facilities
Accessible seating is available in the West Stand, where the club also lists five accessible unisex toilets. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are permitted. Sensory packs containing ear defenders and sensory toys can be hired from the club shop on matchdays; the venue’s accessibility information explains the refundable charge.
Lifts at the West Stand Hospitality Entrance connect the ground floor with the Club and Suite Levels and accommodate wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Those hospitality levels have accessible toilets. The stadium also offers a limited number of accessible viewing bays with companion seats in the West Stand bowl, arranged through its hospitality team.
Our advice (opinion): If travelling with someone who uses sensory equipment, make the club shop part of your arrival route: that is where the stadium’s ear defenders and sensory toys are available.

Kenton Bank Foot food and the stadium neighbourhood
Twin Farms is at 22 Main Road, Kenton Bank Foot, Kingston Park, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE13 8AB. The pub explicitly welcomes people eating before rugby at the Newcastle ground. It occupies a traditional farmstead building and serves real ale, providing a named neighbourhood option beyond the bars inside Kingston Park.
Twin Farms lists a terrace, wood fires, children’s facilities and accessible facilities among its features. Its published food choices include a main menu, children’s menu and plant-based menu. The address is in Kenton Bank Foot, so it fits a stadium-side visit rather than requiring a return into central Newcastle for food.
Kingston Park’s West Stand also operates as a conference and events venue. Its named rooms include the President’s Lounge, Premier Club, The Fifteen and 100 Club, while the original East Stand has the 1877 function suite beside the Tap & Tackle. The 100 Club is advertised for up to 300 event guests.
Premier Inn Newcastle Airport South places its hotel 200 yards from Callerton Parkway Metro station and 1.5 miles from the airport. The operator lists free parking for hotel guests. This is an Airport-branch accommodation option outside central Newcastle, with the railway connection providing the useful relationship between the hotel and the Kingston Park matchday journey.
Our opinion: For a Newcastle weekend, we would keep the accommodation search focused on how easily it connects to the Airport Metro branch. A central base suits a trip built around the city as well as Kingston Park; a Kenton Bank Foot stop makes more sense when the rugby and Twin Farms are the main priorities. The short station walks make either approach workable without treating the stadium as a city-centre ground.

Kingston Park questions
The current home rugby team is Newcastle Red Bulls. Newcastle Falcons remains the name attached to earlier matches, title-winning history and many older stadium references. The 2025 change affected the club’s branding while retaining Kingston Park as its home, so the Brunton Road destination remains relevant to both names.
Hospitality at Kingston Park spans private executive boxes and shared suites. The North West Suite offers small plates, the Premier Suite has three-course dining, and the 100 Club couples food stations with a West Stand seat. Choosing between these products therefore changes the meal and lounge arrangements as well as the match seat.
The 2015 freehold purchase brought the ground back under Newcastle Rugby’s control after the period of university ownership. Bdaily reported that the then-current lease had been due to expire in summer 2017. The purchase secured the club’s existing Kingston Park base before that expiry point. The sale also established a ten-year partnership giving Northumbria University’s rugby teams access to stadium training and matches.
The Newcastle ticketing account is retained when a supporter changes phones: the club says to download the app again and log in with the account used for the purchase. Removing the app does not remove the account-linked tickets. The ticket office is the contact for an issued ticket still missing after the correct account has been opened.
