Gilbert Brutus and the Dragons story

Stade Gilbert Brutus opened in 1962 in northern Perpignan. StadiumDB distinguishes the existing ground from a proposed north-stand redevelopment: its design account describes an established capacity of 10,460 and a future target of 13,180. Those are different stages of a project, not interchangeable descriptions of the same stadium. The opening year is clear; conflicting published capacity figures require more caution.

The professional Dragons grew out of a local merger. XIII Catalan and Saint-Estève combined in 2000 as Union Treiziste Catalane, which won the French league and cup double in 2005. Super League entry followed in 2006. Renovation work at Brutus meant that early home fixtures used other grounds, so the club's first Super League season and its settled residence here have different timelines.

The club's honours include the 2018 Challenge Cup and the 2021 League Leaders' Shield. Wembley provided the breakthrough cup victory over Warrington; the Shield recognised finishing first in the regular Super League season. Both achievements belong to the Brutus era, although the final itself took place in London. The Dragons had already reached Wembley in 2007, only their second Super League season.

One of Brutus's defining nights came on 6 October 2023. Catalans beat St Helens 12–6 in the play-off semi-final, with Sam Tomkins producing the decisive late try and Adam Keighran adding the conversion. Saints' own report records the end of their reign as champions. This is a ground-specific memory: the passage to Old Trafford was secured on the Perpignan pitch.

Catalan identity on the esplanades

Catalan culture has appeared explicitly in the matchday programme. For Leigh's June 2025 visit, the hosts advertised castellers, gegants and sardana dancers alongside the rugby. Leigh reproduced the Dragons' information for travelling supporters. These were named cultural performances at a particular fixture, rather than a guarantee that the same programme accompanies every home game.

The regular entertainment page identifies three distinct esplanades: Guasch-Laborde, Bonzoms and Puig-Aubert. Sud de France supports the fan zones, which combine drinks counters, food trucks and activities. The stadium shop is on the Puig-Aubert esplanade. These stand names therefore describe the social spaces around the ground as well as the seating sections inside it.

The entertainment mix differs between those areas. The club lists Team Spirit Animation at Bonzoms, while the Puig-Aubert zone includes music, visual entertainment and wooden games. Wonder Pompom dancers are part of the published half-time programme. The detail gives families something concrete to identify on arrival without assuming that every activity takes place beside their own entrance.

Our opinion: the three named esplanades are a better introduction to Brutus than treating it as an anonymous overseas away end. Puig-Aubert combines the shop with its fan-zone space; Bonzoms and Guasch-Laborde provide different places to spend the build-up. The Catalan performances, when scheduled, make a particularly distinctive addition to the rugby.

Perpignan station, buses and the northern approach

The club gives the stadium's visitor address as Avenue de l'Aérodrome, 66000 Perpignan and directs rail passengers to Perpignan. Its road instructions from the north use A9 exit 41, Perpignan Nord, followed by the D900 towards the airport. The ground is on the airport side of the city, rather than beside the central railway station.

Sankéo's partnership with the Dragons includes travel to the stadium without a separate bus fare when supporters present their match ticket. The operator also describes shuttles waiting outside Brutus after evening matches for the return to central Perpignan. This is a specific rugby transport arrangement, with the ticket serving a second purpose on the bus as well as at the stadium.

Sankéo maintains a separate entry called Navette Dragons Catalans in its timetable catalogue, including a 2026 shuttle document. The same catalogue separately lists the USAP shuttle, which serves the other rugby club. Selecting the Dragons document matters: an itinerary designed for Aimé Giral is not the published Brutus match shuttle. The operator's catalogue also carries current seasonal network plans.

The club identifies the Jean Rousset sports-complex car park, formerly Alcover, for supporters. Access is from Rue Pierre Vidal and Rue de la Tour de Madeloc; it is described as unsecured. This named off-site facility is distinct from the internal stadium parking mentioned in hospitality material. Parking access depends on which arrangement a visitor has actually booked.

Our pick (opinion): For a train-based trip, we would use the advertised match shuttle onward from Perpignan, keeping the rail journey and stadium transfer together.

Food, tickets and two-match afternoons

The club's published information for the Leigh match in May 2026 explains a token system for food and drink, with tokens available from the stadium bars. It also says that bars and snack counters accept bank cards directly. Reusable cups were supplied through Perpignan company Ecopafiesta. These are documented arrangements from that season, rather than a claim about every individual concession's future menu.

That same Leigh match programme assigned karaoke to Guasch-Laborde, a Créason DJ and wooden games to Puig-Aubert, and Team Spirit Animation to Bonzoms. It also placed the inclusion charity Rêves de Gosse beside the shop. Those examples show how the esplanades are programmed individually; the relevant home-match notice supplies the actual line-up for a particular visit.

Brutus sometimes stages a reserve-team curtain-raiser. In May 2026, Saint-Estève XIII Catalan played Albi before the Dragons hosted Leigh, and the club stated that the main-match ticket or season ticket covered both games. This connects the Super League occasion to the French domestic competition and the club's reserve side on the same pitch. It was an advertised double-header, not a permanent addition to every fixture.

The official ticketing page offers seat selection through the online box office and sales through the stadium shop. Matchday ticket booths are at Puig-Aubert. Season-ticket administration is also associated with that stand, with the club offices on its second floor. A ticket collection or sales enquiry therefore has a named destination within the ground's layout, rather than simply “the main stand”.

Bonzoms, Puig-Aubert and reserved seats

Bonzoms was refurbished in 2007 with 3,000 red-and-gold seats. The club's ground history then records a covered western stand of 2,500 seats added in 2011. That second redevelopment moved the principal entrance to the western side. These separate building phases explain why the stands have different identities within a stadium that predates the Dragons' professional team.

Leeds' July 2026 away-ticket notice describes its allocation in Tribune Puig-Aubert as covered, reserved seating in a corner of the pitch. That gives a precise account of one visiting allocation rather than implying that away supporters occupy an entire end. The allocation details are supplied by the travelling club for its own fixture, which is the useful reference for comparable away-ticket purchases.

The Dragons' visitor instructions reproduced by Leigh specify numbered seats and require supporters to show a valid pass whenever they enter a stand. Movement around the fan zones does not erase the seat allocation. The wording is particularly relevant at Brutus because the pre-match entertainment encourages circulation around several esplanades before supporters return to their own numbered places.

The Salon Panoramique Lafage occupies the third and highest floor of Puig-Aubert. The hospitality offer also includes Club Premium by Dali Hôtel and a Premium Cocktail option, while the Palco VIP is placed high in the stand. These are separate hospitality products with different settings, not alternative names for a normal corner seat bought through an away club.

Our advice (opinion): We would pay close attention to a Puig-Aubert away allocation: its covered corner seating offers a specific perspective that differs from a central touchline seat.

Wheelchair tickets and confirmed access information

Leeds' 2026 visitor notice sends wheelchair-ticket enquiries directly to Catalans at infos@catalansdragons.com. It separately handles ambulant-disabled tickets through the Leeds ticket office. The distinction is useful because those two ticket types do not follow the same booking route. The notice does not publish a comprehensive description of viewing-platform dimensions, accessible toilet locations or lift provision.

Huddersfield's information for its 2026 visit likewise directs wheelchair users and carers to Catalans, giving the club's French telephone number, 04 68 35 45 30. The Giants’ notice distinguished wheelchair bookings from ambulant-disabled tickets, with a free carer category listed alongside the latter. It also told travelling supporters that match tickets would be issued as print-at-home PDF files, and confirmed that the Catalans ticket office would open on matchday.

The Dragons also run a wheelchair rugby league team, the Handi Dragons. The club records French championship and cup success as well as Challenge Cup and European club honours. This is part of the organisation's sporting identity, but the existence of that team should not be mistaken for a detailed access audit of the spectator stands at Gilbert Brutus.

Central Perpignan before and after Brutus

O'Shannon is an Irish pub at 3 Rue de l'Incendie in central Perpignan, listed by ArrivalGuides for its beer selection. It is a city-centre option rather than a bar inside the Brutus complex. Naming its actual street helps distinguish the evening part of a Perpignan stay from the separate journey north to Avenue de l'Aérodrome.

The Castillet provides a specific heritage stop in central Perpignan. France's historic-monument record identifies three construction phases: the main gateway around 1368, the adjoining Notre-Dame gate in 1481–1485 and a polygonal bastion in 1542. Its defensive architecture belongs to the city's older northern entrance, a different setting from the modern rugby ground farther out.

The Palace of the Kings of Majorca is another substantial city visit. The regional tourism authority dates it to the thirteenth century and describes its role as the centre of the short-lived kingdom of Majorca for almost a century. This is a royal palace in Perpignan, not a stadium museum; its history gives a longer perspective on the Catalan identity encountered around Brutus.

Brutus questions with specific answers

What is the ground's recorded peak Dragons crowd? The club lists 11,856 against Wigan on 2 July 2016. Its larger club attendance record, 31,555 against Wigan in May 2019, belongs to Camp Nou in Barcelona. Keeping the venue attached to each figure avoids turning a relocated showcase match into a supposed attendance at Gilbert Brutus.

Is every Dragons home event held in Perpignan? No: the club's twentieth-anniversary ticket page advertised a June 2026 match at Stade Jean Bouin in Paris. Its accessible-ticket instructions referred to that Paris event and its own ticketing contact. A special-event page therefore cannot safely supply Brutus access details, even when it appears inside the Dragons' official ticketing system.

Our opinion: pair Brutus with central Perpignan if the purpose is to understand the club's setting. The Castillet and royal palace supply a strong contrast to the modern Puig-Aubert hospitality stand, while the match shuttle links the city-centre part of the visit to the rugby.

Super League's account of the 2023 semi-final describes a tightly contested match against the reigning champions, settled by Tomkins at the end. The competition framed it as his final appearance at Brutus at the time. The significance was both collective and personal: Catalans reached another Grand Final while their full-back supplied a dramatic farewell moment.

Hospitality at Puig-Aubert is organised around more than the panoramic room. The Club Premium package combines a seated meal with a place in the official stand, while Premium Cocktail is presented as a different format within the same club space. The distinction is between the reception experience and the ticketed viewing place, which are described together in the club's own offer.
